Seo Wanho/서완호

서완호 작가는 주로 도시 외곽이나, 원래의 기능을 잃어버린 배회하는 풍경을 그리고 있다. 작업 초기에는 타인의 얼굴에 비닐을 씌운 상태를 묘사한 인간에게서 교환가치만을 남긴 작업을 진행하였고, 이후 녹아내리는 듯한 초상화 연작으로 인물의 감정이 투사된 이미지를 만드는 작업을 이어오고 있다.
2017년부터 인물에서 풍경으로 관심이 옮겨가면서 화면 위에는 인물이 사라지거나 인물의 실루엣만 남기는 방식으로 작업했다. 이로써 미리 정해놓은 메세지와 감정은 캔버스 뒤로 유보하고, 자의성이 배제된 묘사로써 감상자가 작품에 개입할 여지를 남겨 놓으려 했다. 기법적으로 유화의 물성을 이용해 형체를 밀어내거나, 과장 혹은 삭제 하는 방식으로 대상에서 느껴지는 감정이나 느낌을 극대화 시키는 방법으로 작품연구를 하고 있다.

Artist Seo, Wanho mainly paints landscapes that wander on the outskirts of the city or have lost their original function. Early time in his work, the artist focused on works that left only the exchange value in humans, describing a state of applying vinyl to strangers' faces. Subsequently, the artist painted images that projected the emotions of the subjects through a series of portraits that seemed to melt away.
From 2017, the subject shifted from figures to landscapes, where characters disappeared or only silhouettes remained on the screen. Thus, predetermined assertions and emotions were reserved behind the canvas, providing the opportunity for viewers to engage with the work through a depiction from which volition has been excluded. The artist conducts research through techniques that maximize the emotions or feelings perceived from the subject by pushing out forms using the physical properties of oil paint or by exaggerating or erasing them.
